Wearables in the construction industry to increase safety

The project is in collaboration with Volvo Construction Equipment. The purpose of this project was to develop and implement a useful device on workers' clothing, to increase safety among construction workers. With the help of observations and interviews at construction sites, various requirements and needs have been found, in order to be able to be followed and fulfilled through product development.

The design methodology method has been followed to work on this project and develop this solution.

The solution is an LED vest that indicates the construction workers when a vehicle/machine approaches. The vest can calculate the distance between the workers and the machines, depending on how large the distance is, it can also indicate with different colors. These colors tell you how close the machine is, and that the intensity increases the smaller the distance.

During the Project, various prototypes have been made to be tested and used by construction workers on site. These prototypes as well as feedback from users have helped product development. This project has since been presented to Volvo CE for further development and implementation for Volvo's own machines.
